April 4 - How Heifer Works

How does Heifer help families lift themselves out of poverty? First, Heifer partners with community groups to plan a livestock or agriculture project. Heifer staff meets with groups to make sure their goals are compatible with Heifer’s mission, and that the groups will be able to finish their projects. When a project is approved, Heifer trains the group in animal care, environmentally friendly farming, gender equity, and community development. Recipients also agree to share one or more of their animals’ offspring with others in need in what Heifer calls Passing on the Gift, multiplying the benefits of the original gift throughout the community.
